From the time of Caesar until the advent of the railroad in the 19th century, there were no major changes in mechanics that made a trip around the world faster, cheaper, or safer. In the fewer than 200 years since passenger railroads were introduced, however, transportation technology has advanced to such an extent that one can travel the globe with relative comfort and ease in a single day. Such is one impact of mechanical engineering in modern history.

The department of Mechanical Engineering, famous as "Mech D" among the prodigious students of department, was established in 1964. It is one of the premier departments of the Institute. The department offers separate undergraduate four year degree course, two year regular postgraduate degree program in computer aided design and three year PG degree program in mechanical design & Industrial System Engineering. The curriculum of these programs encompasses latest developments in the field as well as present day and future needs of Industries.

Mechanical Engineers rolling out from the institute are well groomed specially in the areas of software development/handling and Research and Development activities apart from traditional areas. Continuous updating in the curriculum polishes the budding engineers to meet the challenge posed by newer technologies. Department has enriched potential and dedicated faculty members whose whole hearted involvement is the biggest strength. Besides allthese factors, department contains all the major laboratories like CAD/CAM lab, Material Testing Lab, Non Conventional Energy Lab, ToM Lab, Heat Transfer Lab & Hydraulics Lab with latest and newly developed machineries and equipments so that students can sharp their technical skills in more practical and effective manner.
